Firstly, this viewpoint is seen from an African perspective.
let's start with the definition of democracy. The dictionary definitions is quite simple "rule by the people", or a system whereby people (politicians) campaign competitively for the people's votes to achieve the power to make public decisions.
Now here is the joke, if you do not vote, you just don't count. Where is the freedom of choice in this. Most people actually live under a social system of even (like the poor Americans), under a police state, but somebody keeps on telling them this is democracy and they keep on believing it.
Lets take this from the beginning, a election is called (or automatically happens every 4 years of so, depending on where you live). Let's say there are four candidates, all full of promises, as usual. Now, you as a voter has a choice, isn't that wonderful, you get to choose who your next leader is, but what if you think they are all a bunch of fools? You do have the option not to vote, but that count for nothing. Right here is my problem with this system, if you do not vote it does not count. What is 50 % of the population decides not to vote, that should count for a lot, that clearly states that half the populations is not happy with any of the smooth talking, smiley face, power hungry freaks, but it does not. Your choice is simply this, pick a fool, any fool, but if you do not pick one, you loose your so called democratic right, you have no more say. The percentage of people that does not vote, should be a vote in itself, it should count.
Also, the more money you can pump into your election, the better the spin doctors you can afford, the better your chances. Is this democracy of capitalism? The line tends to blur, but as long as we are told this is democracy, we tend to believe it.
WAKE UP!
Good point, Rika. But what is the alternative?
ReplyDeleteDo not know how I did it, but missed your comment, hence the late reply. Well I do not have the full solution, but for starters, if say half the population does not vote, nobody wins, we get new candidates and we vote again.
ReplyDeleteIndeed good points Rika...Unfortunately the arseholes who are supposed to read this are drinking expensive wines in the limos.
